During WWII, the U.S. army set up simple maintenance yards at frontlines to enable quick repair of their vehicles. A variety of tools including simple cranes to lift light vehicles, gas cylinders for welding, and painting compressors were prepared for fixing small vehicles, light trucks, and even AFVs. From the German invasion onwards, these maintenance yards were significant for Allied forces at European fronts.
